What is an office chair?
An office chair is a chair designed for use at a desk in an office. It is usually a swivel chair, with wheels for mobility and height adjustment. Modern office chairs typically use a single, special bearing leg (often referred to as a gas lift leg), which is placed underneath the seat. Near the floor, this leg spreads out into many smaller, often wheeled legs called wheels.
History of office chairs
Office chairs were developed around the mid-19th century as more and more workers sat at their desks, leading to the adoption of some features not found in other types of chairs. The concept of a swivel chair with wheels was illustrated by Nuremberg nobleman Martin Löffelholz von Kolberg in his 1505 tech-illuminated manuscript.
American inventor Thomas E. Warren (born 1808), designed the Radial Spring Armchair in 1849, manufactured by the American Chair Company in Troy, New York. It was first presented at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. It was only around 1850 when a group of engineers in the United States began investigating how chairs could improve health and relaxation by emphasizing posture and movement.
Office chairs are strategically designed to increase the productivity of office workers by allowing them to sit at their desks for long periods of time. A swivel chair with wheels allows employees to remain seated while still having access to certain locations in their work area, eliminating time and energy spent standing. The wooden saddle is designed to fit and support the body of the seated employee, and the grooved back and armrests provide additional support for increased employee comfort. Like modern chairs, many of these models are somewhat adjustable for maximum comfort and therefore maximum working time.
There are different types of office chairs designed to fit different needs. The most basic type is an ergonomic chair, which usually has no lumbar support or headrest. These chairs usually can’t sit for more than a few hours at a time without discomfort, although they often have more room to move around than higher-end chairs.
The mid-back chair offers fuller back support, and with the right ergonomic design, you can sit for four hours straight or longer. High-end chairs in this category, such as the Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Leap are very comfortable for long periods of time. In particular, some mid-back seats offer customization options that can allow additional headrests.
The executive seat or full backrest provides full back and head support. Many director chairs are designed to sit for eight or more hours at a time. These are usually the most expensive office chairs.
